For most technical call center representatives, this question is all too familiar and perhaps constitutes over 60% of their daily logged tickets.

As an end user, it can become quite painful waiting for “the next available tech” to pick up your call, run you through some pre-checks , before finally reading of their script. By the time they’re done with the basics, you’re already winded and have lost your patience.

Save yourself some time and review these basic troubleshooting steps before calling your tech support to help with your laptop power issue.

The walkout guides provided in these steps assume you’re using a traditional laptop. This guide will mostly work with HP, DELL, Lenovo, Acer, and most notebooks.

Small Talk Aside, Let’s Dig In!

First Steps:

Double Check to make sure your power source is live (this can be done by plugging in another load to the same power outlet).

Without plugging directly into your laptop, plug the AC adapter into the power source and inspect the led light. If it is off on the adapter, you may have a dead adapter and will need to get a working one to continue this troubleshooting step.

Check to ensure the laptop battery is properly installed and secured to the Unit. Now try to power on the unit again.

Is the Unit Still dead? Dont’ throw in the towel yet!

Move on to Step 2:

Step 2:

The following troubleshooting steps must be completed in sequence.

  • First, Determine if your laptop is really dead. There is something called static electricity that affects electronic devices’ performance. In order to help discharge any static electric with your laptop board components, perform the following steps:
    1. Detach all external devices plugged into your laptop. (This includes USB & power adapters, and (if applicable), the laptop battery)
    2. With the above step completed, hold down the power button on your laptop for 20 seconds.
    3. Next, gently press the power button for about 30 times (this is a toggle operation).
  • Assuming your adapter is working, plug it into the laptop and press the power button. Hopefully, it should turn on now. If not, you most definitely have a dead system.

AT THIS STAGE, YOUR BEST BET IS CALLING A COMPUTER REPAIR TECH OR THE MANUFACTURER WARRANTY SUPPORT TEAM
